Men’s Health Q & A

What are the top men’s health issues?

Men’s health involves preventing, diagnosing, and treating medical problems many men face, such as:

  • Hormone imbalance
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Prostate problems
  • Obesity
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Reduced muscle mass

Our team at Revitalize Functional Medicine tailors each treatment to your personalized needs, lifestyle, preferences, and desired outcome. We take a naturopathic approach to care, offering conservative and noninvasive men’s health treatments whenever possible.

What men’s health services are offered at our practice?

Wellness exams

During a men’s health exam, our naturopathic specialist reviews your symptoms and medical history, and completes a comprehensive physical examination, including a prostate exam, if necessary. We use blood tests or other diagnostic testing procedures to screen for common men’s health problems.

Nutrition and disease prevention

Men have specific nutritional needs that help to reduce chronic disease risks and enjoy the best quality of life. Your Revitalize Functional Medicine specialist provides nutrition counseling, dietary supplements, and nutritional therapy for disease prevention throughout your wellness journey.

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy

To treat erectile dysfunction, unwanted weight gain, fatigue, depression, and other symptoms of low testosterone, we offer bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, often as subdermal pellets or injections. Bioidentical hormones are structurally identical to the hormones your body naturally produces and are VERY different from synthetic hormones.  Ask your specialist for details.

Naturopathic treatments

If you struggle with chronic pain, fatigue, a disease, or an injury, your Revitalize Functional Medicine specialist can recommend a personalized holistic treatment plan that might include hyperbaric oxygen therapy, acupuncture, ozone treatment, chelation therapy, nutritional supplements, prolotherapy, IV therapy, or medical marijuana.  We are proud to offer many complementary modalities that can work synergistically to help you meet your specific health goals and optimize your well being.

How often should I schedule men’s health appointments?

To achieve optimal health, better energy, and lower disease risks, it’s important to schedule a men’s wellness exam every year (at a minimum) so we can screen you for common men’s health conditions, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and elevated blood sugar.

How do hormonal changes in men impact quality of life?

Men don’t have the three different hormonal shifts like women do. They are either healthy, young and vibrant or they are in andropause. Andropause means “testosterone-pause” which means the ability to make testosterone, DHEA, thyroid and Vitamin D3 is compromised. This is considered normal aging.

Men who seek care through Revitalize Functional Medicine wish to age optimally rather than normally. Normal aging for men can be expressed as fatigue, anxiety, insomnia, low libido, weight gain, poor erectile function and poor body composition.

Supporting men with the right dosage of testosterone, DHEA, thyroid and Vitamin D3 is paramount. In fact, we never need to use hormone blockers. Most men who are on hormone replacement therapy from other doctors, often are taking an aromatase inhibitor. This type of a drug blocks the natural conversion of testosterone to estradiol. The reason other doctors put men on these drugs is to prevent “man boobs”.

“Man boobs” is nothing but fat. Once men get on the optimal dose of testosterone guess what? It burns off fat!  Especially in the boobs and belly. Prescribing testosterone at too low of a dose will not result in burning of the fat in these areas.

Again, the correct delivery method and dosage is paramount to the success of the aging male.
